Great news for Waiotahe Drafts and Dunes residents with a new accessway being constructed down to the beach so that pedestrians and dog-walkers can access the western seawall.

It is a beautiful walk along the beach but please stay out of the marked dunes areas because there is all sorts of construction and planting activity along there. There are also predator control activities to help restore that area to its natural best, so please keep dogs out of there as well.

The Ōpōtiki Harbour channel will open to all public boat traffic from 12pm noon on Friday 15 September, weather dependent.

Traffic management will be set up at the Ōpōtiki Wharf from Friday and throughout the first weekend after the opening so people can safely park their boat trailers away from the road.

Thanks for your patience while we complete the final stages of the Ōpōtiki Harbour Development and remember to stay safe out there.

The Ōpōtiki harbour development in all it’s glory! Bringing big opportunities to a small town.

This photo at high tide shows the narrow gap that will be slowly removed from next week, opening up the river flow between the new seawalls.

🛑 There will be no boat access from Pakihikura to the sea from Monday so the work and dredging can continue safely (keep an eye out for further notices and info from the Bay of Plenty Harbourmaster)

💧 Whakatōhea are holding a small dawn blessing on site on Monday but there will be no public access as it is a SUPER busy and active worksite.

📽 Because there isn't one spectacular moment of water coming through the gap (it will be many hours through a tide change) we'll be collecting timelapse and drone footage to share the moment.

🛥 At some stage next month, the river will re-open to the public and boats can use the new harbour entrance. 🍾 We may not have much notice of that date, but we will share a plan and safety info soon.

🚧 Please remember that the health and safety of everyone on and around this worksite is the Number One Thing - please keep clear in boats and on land. We won't miss out! When it is safe, there will be public access.

🎉 There is still a lot of work to do on this HUGE transformative project and early in 2024, work will be complete and public access to the seawalls will be opened with a splash!

Once this development is complete you can fish all day every day. No bar to navigate. We have sections for sale just a short drive away at the Waiotahe Dunes subdivision. Come home to Ōpōtiki.

Imagine being able to go out fishing whatever time it’s suits you. Not be hindered by a tidal bar. That’s what the Harbour Development in Ōpōtiki will achieve. Buy a section close by in the Waiotahe Dunes subdivision and this can be your everyday.

The Ōpōtiki harbour development team are working away on the western wall. You can see the line of topblocks that have been placed on the western edge ready for the hanbars to slot in next to them.
