Raising a family in an apartment is more than the norm in many countries in the world. Less so in NZ, where people hang onto the idea of one's own standalone home with a garden, grass to mow, and a room for each child. Fenced off from neighbors.

However, the affordability of standalone houses is crippling and may start out of reach for quite a few families.

Hence, the apartment as a compromise. It does come with it'sown set of challenges. Body Corporates can be costly and not well run. Neighbors can be inconsiderate and have no concept of intertenancy living.

Still, we live in the hope that NZ society will mature and make this style of living more attractive and appreciated.

Here's hoping that buildings like the Ascot Flats 128 Newton Rd, Auckland, will become exempt from the earthquake strengthening rules that were brought in by the government in 2017. Auckland is low risk for earthquakes, but a one size fits all legislation was introduced that both stigmatized buildings and crippled owners financially as they faced fixing a building for an event that probably won't happen.
Has common sense prevailed? I certainly hope so. It's the stuff of unicorns 🦄 🙄 when it does.

What I love about living in the Mt Eden area. Farros and its special foods. Today's tasting plate was especially good. It would be rude to say no.

This cat even fits the color scheme of the Ascot. Enjoying the garden. We are sitting together at the entrance for my open home. Perhaps I'll check him in as a visitor.
