NZ Budget 2026: what it means for property

This Budget is more about unlocking housing supply than boosting demand. The focus is on planning reform, infrastructure funding, and reducing bottlenecks so more homes can be built over time, supporting a steadier, more sustainable market recovery.

Key property highlights:
- Planning/RMA reform funding to modernise consenting, planning data, and flood mapping
- $400m council housing growth incentive to help fund growth-enabling infrastructure
- Development levy oversight to improve transparency and keep costs in check
- Up to 2,250 additional social homes and an expanded future construction workforce

Treasury is still forecasting a gradual recovery rather than a sharp rebound.
