As a member of our Auckland community, I wanted to share a simple explanation of El Niño and why we may hear more about it over the coming months.

El Niño is a natural climate pattern that occurs when the Pacific Ocean becomes unusually warm, influencing weather patterns across New Zealand and other parts of the world.

For Auckland, El Niño can increase the likelihood of longer dry periods, warmer conditions and stronger winds, particularly during summer. It can also increase the risk of dry gardens, water demand and fire danger during prolonged dry spells. However, it doesn’t mean Auckland will be dry all the time — we can still experience periods of rain and even heavy rainfall.
