11 years in property management. Hereās my top tips for a successful career in the industry.
1. Donāt be rigid. There are many ways to get the job done and the sooner you open your mind to other optionās the more efficient and effective you can be.
2. Never stop learning. Strive to be the industry expert, you canāt know everything but you can certainly out position yourself by consistently learning and growing.
3. Be kind. We work in an industry that opens us up to many different people from all walks of life. Thatās a privilege and itās your responsibility to respect that.
4. Thereās always 3 sides to a story. His side, her side and the truth. Donāt let emotion cloud your judgement and always remember that as the professional itās your job to stay impartial.
5. Document everything. Everything. Donāt take short cuts just save the email, save the txt, save it ALL because even the people you thought you could trust may challenge you.
6. Donāt take life so seriously, let people feel relaxed around you. Make connections built on trust and a genuine interest in getting to know them and their story, your job will be infinitely easier when you take the time to understand people at their core.
7. Do the hard thing first. Or as they say, eat the frog. Just do it , by waiting youāll only make yourself anxious and the person waiting on you more annoyed.
8. Less is more. Trust me, Iām terrible at always over compensating, over explaining , over doing almost everything. The most important thing to remember is that most people will speak for themselves if you just say less.
9. Be a yes person. Go to the events, meet people and grow your network. Even when youāre tired, especially when youāre tired. Because I promise you that when everyone else is home watching Netflix, that extra meeting you booked will be your ticket into a new network.
10. Stay humble. I donāt mean that you shouldnāt celebrate your wins but do it with grace and remember thereās always someone watching you, lead with pride.
11. Most importantly, be so passionate about your job that nobody questions your ability, not even yourself !
