So very proud of the people of Dunedin standing against the Government announcement on Thursday to cut back the Hospital Build.

The current Hospital is not fit for purpose and the Southern Region needs and deserves a new Hospital that is fit for purpose., that serves the people of the Southern region of NZ both now and for future generations to come.

Our clinicians deserve a facility that meets current standards and provides them with the opportunities to optimise patient care.

Otago Medical School, the longest serving medical training centre in NZ, deserves a facility that meets current standards and provides our future doctors, who will practice both domestically and internationally, with future-proof facilities.

To attract the best clinicians, both to treat patients, and train clinicians, we need modern fit for purpose facilities that don’t leak, that are designed around best practice, that have efficient co-location of services and that facilitate optimisation of care.

The Southern region is the widest spread region of Aotearoa. The people of the Southern Region deserve a modern tertiary level hospital that facilitates robust, modern, efficient clinical outcomes.

Let’s be clear. This is about choices. The money isn’t just a commitment to the here and now. It is a commitment to the future as well.

The Southern Region matters. The people of the South matter. Our clinicians, who do their utmost to provide excellent patient care in what are well-known substandard facilities, matter. Our future clinicians, which the South has a proud history of training, matter.

The new Southern Region Hospital Facility matters! Build it Once. Build it Right!

As part of an effort to acknowledge the need for additional Housing Capacity, Council has released its first decision on Variation 2. The decision changes rules for areas throughout suburban Dunedin, by loosening family flats rules, allowing smaller site sizes and providing for duplexes, creating more flexibility for development and providing a smoother pathway for social housing consenting that exceeds density limits. The decision permits increased density of housing in areas in Mosgiel, Concord, Andersons Bay, Wakari, Mornington, Belleknowes, Roslyn, Maori Hill, Kaikorai Valley and Opoho, among others. The Decision is still subject to an Appeal period, but will apply from 31 May 2022, with the plan (www.dunedin.govt.nz/2gp) already updated.
