Update: Nothing recovered from the theif 😢Told the Police I only care about documents that cannot be replaced, anything else is not so important. I am guttered, got a glimmer of hope that is now gone.

Email below received tonight after a visit to Police Station. I asked more questions about why I wasn't informed & advised conflicting info. Police officer didn't know he was arrested, didn't have enough evidence, didn't know if there would be any conviction, wasn't aware until the file landed on her desk etc. I simply asked just why didn't you tell me? No clear answer.

I really feel for the truck driver, I hope they recovered. No one deserves that while just doing their job. Newark articles show 25 sentences, approx 130 convictions. He has declined help, has not shown true remorse.

"Good evening Helen,

This is Constable XX from Hamilton Police.

According to the information you request about the Burglary happened at ###X, the defendant confirmed as Calem JACKSON and sentenced to imprisonment for 1 year; unfortunately, police could not recovered any of your stolen items because JACKSON did not have a fix address to live; police also did reparation schedule to court, but JACKSON has exchange his time imprison with the reparation to pay back to victims."

Calem Jackson crashed into the rubbish truck before launching his attack on the driver.

They got him! This is a grown mature man that stole my most precious, irreplaceable things, not a young idiot making a stupid mistake. The Police never notified us of hearing or if anything was recovered! We work our butts off for what we have & some of the things he stole can never be replaced. At least society & the community is safe for a year. He has a huge history of 130 convictions, this is his 25th sentencing. He got done for king hit on a rubbish truck driver that he crashed into. Poor driver just doing his job. What a waste of space & drain on society.

šŸ  Granny flats: new consent rules.

From 15 January 2026 you can build a stand‑alone granny flat up to 70 m² without needing a building consent, if it meets the rules.

šŸ  Granny flats: new consent rules.

From 15 January 2026 you can build a stand‑alone granny flat up to 70 m² without needing a building consent, if it meets the rules.

Here’s what that means:
• must be single‑storey, stand‑alone and simple in design
• must fully comply with the Building Code
• construction must be carried out by, or under the supervision of, a licensed building professional
• you still need to notify your council before and after building (via a Project Information Memorandum)

Important: local planning rules, natural hazards and resource consent requirements may still apply, so it’s worth checking with your council before you start.

This change makes it easier to add safe, compliant secondary housing in backyards and helps reduce the time and cost of smaller builds.
