1️⃣𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 🍳
Cooking can generate up to 3 litres of moisture inside a home each day. 💧

Without proper extraction, that moisture stays inside the home and can contribute to damp conditions, including in hidden areas you can't easily see.

Rangehood on. Vent outside. Small habit. Big difference. ✅

🥶Cold winters
🌧️ High rainfall
💧 High humidity

That combination means homes need effective drainage, good ventilation, and regular maintenance to perform properly.

Moisture risk isn't always about poor construction. Sometimes it's simply the result of environmental conditions placing ongoing pressure on a home.

It's one of the reasons moisture management is so important in Kiwi homes. 🏡

Not all moisture is visible straight away. 👀

Plumbing leaks, roof issues, or wall penetrations can allow water to enter hidden spaces.

Over time, trapped moisture can affect framing, linings, and insulation, leading to costly repairs if left unresolved.

Finding the source is critical as surface repairs alone don’t solve the problem. 🔎

Bathrooms and kitchens generate a lot of moisture every day. 💧

Without proper extraction fans, that moisture has nowhere to go. Instead, it settles on windows, walls, and ceilings, creating the conditions mould needs to grow.

Extraction fans are the first line of defence, but opening windows regularly can also help remove excess moisture and improve airflow throughout the home.

In NZ homes, managing moisture starts with good ventilation. Extraction fans and fresh air can make a big difference. ✅

Plants growing too close to exterior walls can block the vents in a cladding system. 🌿

Those vents are there for a reason. They allow air to move through the cavity so moisture can escape and the wall can dry properly.

When plants, soil, or garden beds cover these openings, airflow is reduced and damp conditions can develop and affect the home.

Keeping vegetation clear of the cladding helps the system work the way it was designed to.

Older homes often have little insulation, or insulation that no longer performs as intended.

This can leave ceilings and walls cooler, allowing condensation to form when warm indoor air meets those surfaces.

When damp surfaces become a regular occurrence, mould has the moisture it needs to thrive. 💧

Good insulation helps keep homes warmer, drier, and more comfortable while reducing the conditions that allow moisture and mould to develop.

Cladding that sits too close to the ground can create the conditions mould thrives on.

When the base of the wall stays damp from soil, plants, or poor clearance, the exterior surface can struggle to dry When the base of the wall stays damp from soil, plants, or poor clearance, the exterior surface can struggle to dry . 💧

Cladding should generally sit 100mm above paved surfaces and 175mm above soil, grass, or bark. 🌱

Without that gap, moisture can build up around the base of the wall and mould can start to form on the outside of the home.

New Zealand’s climate brings high rainfall, cool winters, and humidity 🌧️

That combination can create the perfect conditions for moisture problems.

Even well-built homes can experience moisture issues if ventilation, drainage, and maintenance aren’t kept in check.

Managing moisture early helps protect both the home and the people living in it. Prevention is always easier than repair. ✅

Damp environments can contribute to respiratory issues such as asthma and allergies.

Moist air also feels colder, which often leads to higher heating use 🔥 and increased energy costs. 💰

A dry home is generally healthier and more efficient.

Moisture control isn’t just about the building, it’s about comfort too. ✅
