This month - Talk to your family about prostrate cancer and how to detect it - Your fathers, grandfathers, partners and/or husbands, sons, brothers, uncles, mates, team members, work colleagues... those near and dear to you. Early detection saves lives.
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in New Zealand, with about 4,500 new cases each year—more than breast cancer—and an average of 12 diagnoses each day.
• Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men after lung cancer, and the third leading cause overall, behind lung and bowel cancers.
• One in eight men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime.
• About 740 New Zealand men die from prostate cancer each year.
• An estimated 42,000 men in New Zealand are living after a prostate cancer diagnosis.
• Sixty-one percent of prostate cancer survivors say they had no symptoms at diagnosis.
• Prostate cancer can run in families: a man with two or more first-degree relatives diagnosed before age 65 has a five- to eleven-fold higher risk.
