On a steep, challenging site, Jarrod talks through how cantilevering the new deck could extend the home’s usable footprint and create a whole lot more outdoor living space.

Think this looks too small for a home?

This is the site for our new 40m² granny flat, and yes, it’s narrow.

That’s exactly what makes this project so interesting.

Rather than trying to squeeze a standard plan into the available space, we custom designed the home to suit the site, making every square metre work.

And somehow, we’re fitting in a separate bedroom, kitchen and living area, full bathroom and an office.

Over the next few weeks, we’re going to show you exactly how we take this patch of ground and turn it into a clever little home, from the design decisions and changes we made along the way to construction and the final reveal.

And the plans you saw in our first post?

They aren’t quite the plans we’re building anymore. 😉

Not every great home starts on an easy section.

Some of our favourite projects have been on sites that others would have walked away from. Steep driveways, challenging contours, restricted access… they’re all problems that can be solved with the right team and the right planning.

This home is a great example. What looked like a difficult site became the perfect place for a beautiful, functional home.
