Keen to see the highest public road in New Zealand?

The Nevis Road is around 1,300m above sea level (at its highest point), 70 kilometres long, with amazing views, picnic spots, and historic sites.

Getting to the Nevis Road will take around 40 minutes from The Getaway, with great small towns along the way, like Bannockburn, known for great vineyards, wine, and restaurants!

Driving the Nevis is best done with a 4x4 vehicle as it's a rough, steep, and remote off-road trail with river crossings. Prepare for adventure!

Most days, we see (and hear!) flocks of birds flying north in the mornings and flying south in the evenings. Although usually in smaller groups, sometimes these flocks get pretty big!

Would you happen to know what species of birds these are, and where they might be going? We'd love to know!
