Today, Stats New Zealand released the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI), and REINZ has issued the following statement in response:

Today's CPI data shows annual inflation at 4.1% for the June quarter, broadly in line with market expectations, though still above the Reserve Bank's target band of 1-3%. Much of that pressure is coming from fuel prices rather than housing, with rents remaining subdued. The June CPI will be one of several data points the Reserve Bank will likely weigh ahead of the September OCR review, and we'll be watching how it factors into their thinking on mortgage costs and affordability.

What is the CPI?
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures changes in the prices of the goods and services New Zealand households buy, such as food, transport, and household utilities. It is New Zealand's main measure of inflation. It helps show how the cost of living is changing over time and is one of the factors considered when decisions are made about interest rates.
