It’s World Cancer Day.

Every year on World Cancer Day, the cremated remembrance candle bags from Relay for Life are scattered in the garden of Margaret Stewart House to remember those impacted and lost to cancer. 💛💙

Today is an important but difficult day for many New Zealanders. Our thoughts go out to all who are facing a diagnosis, those caring for someone with cancer, and those who have lost someone themselves.

The theme for World Cancer Day this year is 'together, we challenge those in power’. We are actively working to challenge those in power through our advocacy campaigns, including stopping the repeal of Smokefree legislation, and petitioning for much needed changes to the National Travel Assistance scheme.

We welcome the appointment of Darryl Carpenter as our new CEO for the Cancer Society Wellington Division. Darryl will start in the role this coming February and bring a wealth of experience in senior leadership roles for government, non-governmental and community organisations – most recently as the Ministry of Health's Group Manager responsible for leading the testing and critical medical supply element of the COVID-19 response. He is looking forward to applying all he's learnt throughout his career to date to support the Cancer Society's wrap-around supportive care, cancer prevention and equity objectives for the Wellington, Wairarapa, Marlborough and Nelson Tasman communities.

A huge thank you to the team from Spark who volunteered their time over two Fridays to assist with a number of tasks around the office and at Margaret Stewart House, our patient accommodation, including gardening, cleaning the pool cars, and cooking meals for patients. An amazing amount of work was accomplished over the two days!

Is your business interested in volunteering at the Cancer Society? We would love to have you! Get in touch with us at [email protected]

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Carol and the team at Dilmah NZ, who have supported us by providing complementary tea for our clients and volunteers at our office and guests staying at Margaret Stewart House for over a decade - that's a lot of tea!

A cup of tea is so much more than just a hot drink; it's a chance to take a moment for yourself, relieve anxiety and stress, and connect with others. Thank you, Dilmah! ☕

We are calling on the new Government to make much-needed changes to the National Travel Assistance (NTA) scheme by December 2024.

28c a kilometre for petrol and up to $100 per night for accommodation for those needing to travel for vital medical treatment simply does not cut it in 2023. Neither does a paper-based system and a reimbursement model. Do you agree?

Unite with us to drive change to the NTA. Read, sign and share our open letter to the incoming Minister of Health at www.letsdrivechange.org.nz

"About seven weeks ago, I got really down. I was walking past, and I thought, I'll go into the Cancer Society. That turned my life around. This art group has just blossomed me out. I feel so alive again."

When we showed Yolande this video, she told us that the art group "are so supportive of each other and are becoming firm friends". Thanks for sharing your story Yolande!
