Whanganui's Yobees Honey: producing mānuka honey in its purest form
Johann Ander is Whanganui born and bred and his honey business – Yobees Honey – gets it honey from the Whanganui region.
His interest and passion for honey started young when as a young teenager he started volunteering at Canaan Honey on Mosston Road. He soon got his own beehives before completing a Certificate in Agriculture from Lincoln University, which in turn led to a full time job for a honey business in Taihape.
After a stint working for Convita Apiaries, Johann started his own business with guidance from Neil Walker, an experienced mānuka honey expert from South Taranaki in 2013. Currently, he has two beekeepers and two honey packers based in his honey shed in Westmere.
Yobees Honey specialises in high-grade, UMF-accredited mānuka honey in its purest form. Most of it is exported to the highest export requirements to the USA, EU and to Japan but he continues to sell to the local market as well. Johann notes that “demand is picking up.”
He points out that “Mānuka honey is more than just a natural sweetener: it is renowned for unique properties that have been shown to improve health and wellbeing.” The benefits include for energy, sleep and gut health, sore throat, dental health, infections and burns and for skin beauty and health care.
Johann explains that, “To develop mānuka honey of the strongest potency you need to mature it for up to five years. Growing the enzymes more slowly leads to a much better result.”
Johann has recently opened a shop at suite 6, 236 Victoria Ave, down the drive next to the Jetts Gym, where he also sells bush honey, (you can get a kg for only $25), as well as mānuka honey.
The shop hours are 9.30 to 4.30 Monday to Friday.
