Yesterday, Java Johns Coffeehouse hosted a monthly Death Café.

And before you picture a room full of people in black cloaks discussing the afterlife over suspicious beverages, that's not quite what this is.

A Death Café is a gathering where people talk openly about death, dying, and mortality.

Not a grief counseling session. Not a sales pitch for funeral arrangements. Just people having a conversation about the one thing every single one of us has in common.

And I think that's kind of wonderful.

Nevada City has always had a certain talent for being unconventional without making a big fuss about it. (It's part of the draw.)

In some towns, people gather to discuss football.

Here, apparently, we gather to discuss the existential mysteries of being alive.

Then probably order more coffee.

Hollywood celebrities. San Francisco dive bars. Now we're talking.

Sam Rockwell and Parker Posey were in the Bay Area for the Mill Valley Film Festival, and naturally, the conversation turned to San Francisco.

Rockwell, who grew up in SF, gave shout-outs to Zeitgeist in the Mission, Toronado in the Lower Haight, and Dandelion Chocolate.

Excellent choices, Sam.

But you missed the Make-Out Room.

I mean, if we're going to celebrate San Francisco's finest institutions of questionable decision-making, let's not leave anybody out.

Parker Posey, who has her own SF connection through Tales of the City, went literary, talking about books that capture the city's peculiar personality.

And I love this.

Not the Golden Gate Bridge. Not a cable car. Not some rooftop cocktail lounge charging $28 for a drink with a sprig of rosemary in it.

Dive bars. Chocolate. Books.

That's the San Francisco I recognize.

I've been hanging out in this city since 1987, and I still think its best qualities are the ones that don't fit neatly into a tourism brochure.

Also, Sam Rockwell has excellent taste in bars. Even if his list is incomplete.

I spent decades as a relationship expert before becoming a Realtor, and I'm starting to suspect I never actually changed careers.

House hunting is dating.

“This one is gorgeous, but something feels off.”

“I know it's not what I said I wanted, but I can't stop thinking about it.”

“My friends hate it.”

“Maybe I can change it.”

Oh, honey.

Sometimes “except for” means paint.

Sometimes “except for” means foundation.

Know the difference.

Things Bay Area buyers rarely put on their Nevada County wish list:

“A really good driveway.”

And then I start showing them acreage.

Suddenly we're discussing grade, gravel, drainage, snow, fire access, turnaround space, and whether Grandma's Honda Civic is going to make it to Thanksgiving.

A long, winding driveway through the trees?

Gorgeous.

A long, winding driveway through the trees that's steep as all get out, washes out every winter, and requires a three-point turn to get a fire truck back out?

Different conversation.

And here's one Bay Area buyers don't always think to ask:

Can a very large, very heavy fire truck even get down this gravel road—and back out again? And can I get by that truck in my vehicle?

Because in fire country, “Can I get my Subaru up the driveway?” is not the only vehicle-access question that matters.

And yes.

The driveway matters.

Here's something I wish more buyers did at open houses:

Stop admiring the house for five minutes.

Try to live in it.

Where do your keys go when you walk in?

Where does the dog food live?

Can two people cook without filing for divorce?

Where does the vacuum go?

If you work from home, where are you actually taking a Zoom call?

Where do the Costco paper towels go? Because apparently every household eventually acquires 19 rolls of paper towels.

Open the closets.

Stand in the shower.

Walk from the bedroom to the bathroom.

Pretend you're carrying groceries from the car.

A house can be gorgeous for 20 minutes.

You're buying it for Tuesday at 7:13 a.m.

Shop for Tuesday.

San Francisco real estate lesson #4,782:

You are not buying a neighborhood.

You're buying a block.

Sometimes you're buying one side of a block.

Walk three blocks in San Francisco and you can change the weather, the noise, the parking, the architecture, the restaurants, the hill, the view, and whether you feel like you're in the middle of everything or hiding from humanity.

This is why “I want to live in Noe Valley” isn't enough information.
Which part?

Same with North Beach. Russian Hill. The Mission. Hayes Valley. Pacific Heights.

The internet can tell you the median price of a neighborhood.
It cannot tell you that the house you're considering is on the good side of the hill with the afternoon sun and the coffee shop you will accidentally spend $1,800 a year in.

That's what we're actually shopping for.

Welcome to October in Grass Valley.

Monday: 90 degrees.
Wednesday: Maybe I'll put the shorts away.
Friday: Should we light the wood stove?
Nope, because Saturday it's 90 again.

This is Second Summer, when Northern California looks at the calendar and says, “That's adorable.”

October in the Sierra Foothills can give you hot afternoons, chilly mornings, and a 40-degree temperature swing just to keep your wardrobe humble.

And yes, San Francisco does its own version. Our nicest, warmest days of the year show up right around the time the rest of the country starts posting pictures of sweaters.

And oooh, those temperature shifts! It can drop a whole 10 degrees from day to night!

Layers. Always layers.

And don't put the fan away just because you found the firewood.
