Terra nullius is a Latin expression meaning "nobody's land". It was a principle sometimes used in international law to justify claims that territory may be acquired by a state's occupation of it.
Majority acquisitions in PNG during early European contacts was alienated for the state through this principle. Western Governments around the globe today have realised flaws in the theory and most are correcting it by recognising the original traditional custodians overlooked during original declarations of territories under the Terra Nullius principle.
