TRIVIA: Did you know? Dr. Jose Protacio M. Rizal was the first Filipino land surveyor.

Being a child of a wealthy landowner family, Jose Rizal studied at the Ateneo de Municipal de Manila a degree in Land Surveying and Assessment where he graduated with honors or sobresaliente on March 14, 1877. He took and passed the licensure exam for land surveying and assessment in 1878 but was not given a license until 1881 when he turned 21.

What Is PRS 92

PRS92 or the Philippine Reference System of 1992 is a homogeneous national network of geodetic control points (GCPs), marked by survey monuments or mojons, that has been established using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. GPS is an all-weather, high precision, global satellite positioning system that revolutionized navigation and surveying operations.

By virtue of EO 45, PRS92 became the standard reference system for all surveying and mapping activities in the Philippines. The order also mandated that all new surveys and maps shall be referred to the new network and all old surveys shall be integrated into it.

Significance

PRS92 serves as the country's standard coordinate reference system for all survey and mapping activities. It provides the means through which base and thematic datasets can be consistently inter-related geographically.

PRS92 is the fundamental component of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI).

Traverse is a method in the field of surveying to establish control networks. It is also used in geodesy. Traverse networks involve placing survey stations along a line or path of travel, and then using the previously surveyed points as a base for observing the next point. There are two types of traverse surveying. They are: Closed traverse: When the lines form a circuit which ends at the starting point, it is known as a closed traverse. Open traverse: When the lines form a circuit ends elsewhere except starting point, it is said to be an open traverse.
