In 1918, during the Battle of the Argonne, nearly 200 American soldiers (the “Lost Battalion”) were trapped behind enemy lines. Under heavy fire, Cher Ami carried a critical message through bullets and poison gas. Despite being shot in the chest, blinded in one eye, and losing a leg, Cher Ami delivered the message that saved 194 soldiers. She was awarded the French Croix de Guerre (War Cross) for bravery and became a symbol of courage.
