How to Check Your Home After a Quake
If the shaking was strong, it is wise to check your house before staying inside:
Look at Walls and Foundations
Search for new cracks, especially wide or zigzag cracks that run across bricks or concrete.
Inspect the Roof and Beams
Check for sagging, broken rafters, or tiles that have moved.
Check Utilities
Turn off the gas if you smell leaks. Look for exposed wires, sparks, or broken pipes.
Try Doors and Windows
If they now jam or no longer fit their frames, the structure may have shifted.
Examine the Ground Around Your Home
Watch for uneven floors, sinkholes, or soil that seems to have moved.
Call a Professional if Needed
If there are big cracks, leaning walls, or other signs of damage, have a licensed engineer or architect check your house before you return.
