REJOINDER: For everyone’s information, the Panagbenga Launching happens in January. This is when the Baguio Flower Festival Foundation, Inc. (BFFI) officially unveils the calendar of events and activities lined up for February.

It’s important to note that Launching ≠ Opening Parade.

The Opening Parade marks the actual start of the month-long festivities and usually happens on February 1, along with events in the Central Business District (CBD) and other key venues across the city.

The Panagbenga Launching, on the other hand, is usually held at the City Hall grounds. It serves as the opening salvo of the festival—featuring performances, messages from organizers and city officials, and a preview of what to expect (Calendar of Events)—rather than a full-scale parade or street celebration.

𝟯𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗔𝗡𝗔𝗚𝗕𝗘𝗡𝗚𝗔 𝗧𝗢 𝗕𝗘 𝗟𝗔𝗨𝗡𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗗 𝗝𝗔𝗡𝗨𝗔𝗥𝗬 𝟭𝟮

The 30th edition of the Panagbenga, otherwise known as the Baguio flower festival, will be formally launched by the Baguio Flower Festival Foundation, Inc. (BFFFI) and the local government at the city hall grounds simultaneously with the conduct of the regular flag raising ceremony on Monday, January 12, 2026.

The annual staging of the month-long Panagbenga, which usually starts every February 1, serves as the city’s major crowd-drawing event, being one of the well-attended festivals in the country.

The theme of the 30th edition of the flower festival is ‘Blooming Without End’, which highlights the sustained growth of the festival over the past three decades.

Members of the BFFFI Board of Trustees will be joining city officials and employees in the formal launching of the month-long activities that will be rolled out on the said date.

Further, the official festival theme and calendar of activities will be formally unveiled by the concerned stakeholders, including city officials and the BFFFI Board of Trustees, during the scheduled launching program.

Panagbenga enjoys the distinction of being the only festival in the country that was earlier included in the elite list of members of the International Festivals and Events Association.

Mayor Benjamin B. Magalong will be delivering the inspirational message while Rep. Mauricio G. Domogan, who is also the BFFFI Chairman, will declare the official launch of the festival. By Dexter A. See

We can’t blame the tourists, they contribute significantly to the city’s economy and tax revenue.

Designating parking spaces outside the city and operating shuttle buses could greatly ease traffic congestion. With proper planning and serious consideration, the LGU has the opportunity to implement a more efficient and long-term solution that benefits both residents and visitors.

Whenever traffic becomes unbearable in Baguio City, the blame-game begins. And tourists are always the usual suspects. They are easy targets for residents and a convenient excuse for those in power.

But should tourists shoulder the blame for Baguio's traffic woes? Do they deserve the bashing and the finger-pointing?

It's important that we look into what the data says about the vehicles coming and going on Baguio's streets. Here are the numbers:

1. According to the city, Baguio's existing roads can only accommodate 10,000 to a maximum of 15,000 vehicles at any given time.

2. According to a survey in 2024 by Metro Pacific Tollways Corp., as many as 53,000 to 60,000 Baguio vehicles are on city streets at any given time. Add to this about 25,000 vehicles by tourists. That's a total of about 85,000 vehicles on city streets that can only accommodate a maximum of 15,000 vehicles.

Looking at these numbers, would you still say that tourists are to blame for Baguio's traffic problems?

I was listening to a podcast the other day. The guest for that episode is an architect based in Japan. He's originally from Baguio City and came home for a few days on the second week of December. He and the podcast host talked a little bit about the traffic problems of Baguio City.

The guest said something that I believe is very true. Here's what he said: "𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗼 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗻𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗴-𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗴𝗮 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗮. There are kernels of truth to what he said. Things that are worth thinking about this lazy Sunday afternoon.
