Have mercy on us 🙏

We celebrate today the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. This solemnity, traditionally celebrated 40 days after Easter (or transferred to the following Sunday in many dioceses), commemorates the moment when the risen Christ ascended bodily into heaven in the presence of His disciples. This event is recorded in Acts 1:6–11, where Jesus, after giving His final instructions, is taken up into the clouds, promising the coming of the Holy Spirit and His eventual return. The Ascension marks the conclusion of Christ’s earthly ministry and the beginning of the Church’s mission to evangelize the world.

Pope Francis has emphasized that the Ascension is not about Jesus “leaving” His disciples, but rather about His continued presence in a new and powerful way. In ascending to the Father, Christ opens the path to heaven for humanity and entrusts His followers with the mission to be His witnesses “to the ends of the earth.” The Holy Father has also highlighted that the Ascension reminds believers that their ultimate destiny is in heaven, and that the Christian life is a pilgrimage toward communion with God, animated by the Spirit.

The feast is one of the oldest solemnities in Christianity, observed since at least the 4th century. It affirms the unity of the Paschal mystery—Christ’s Passion, Resurrection, Ascension, and the sending of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Liturgically, the Ascension underscores both the majesty of the risen Christ and the Church’s identity as His body on earth, called to carry His presence and message into the world. The faithful are reminded that while Christ reigns in glory, they are to live as active disciples, awaiting His return with hope.
