Out for the Holy Week: Safety Tips for the Studio Apartment Dweller
Before you rush and turn vacation mode on, check out these tips to keep your home away from home safe:
1. Don't tell the world you'll be out.
While you may be excited to spend time with family or friends, save these announcements for when you're back.
2. Ask a friend to check your house for you.
Better yet, ask a friend to house sit for you and tell your landlord or caretaker about it.
3. Leave 1 light on.
It's not very economical but if it puts doubt of human presence in a burglar's mind, then it's money well spent.
4. Check your locks.
Test your locks before leaving, making sure they work.
5. Deep keep your valuables.
Like, put them somewhere so unlikely, even you might forget it's there. Better yet, bring them with you.
6. Eat, give or bring perishables.
Coming back relaxed just to be stressed by that rotting banana or molded bread isn't a very nice welcome. Same goes for spoiled unwashed dishes. You might want to eat and clean before leaving.
7. Unplug!
Yes. Even that extension cord that won't be used or the rice cooker that's been cleaned out. Don't leave any appliance plugged, if you can help it. The refrigerator can be exempted but make sure it's at a low setting.
Unplug also from your gadgets. This are a few days in a year where you can reflect in a spiritual way or even spend face-to-face talking time with actual people. Make it count.
Blessed Holy Week, everyone!
