CORDILLERA HAS THE STRONGEST WEAKENING EFFECT ON TYPHOONS IN LUZON, STUDY FINDS
A recent study by a Filipino scientist revealed that the Cordillera mountain ranges play a vital role in weakening typhoons that pass through Luzon. The research found that the Cordillera Range has the strongest weakening effect after a storm’s landfall, helping reduce wind strength as it moves inland.
Meanwhile, the Sierra Madre serves as Luzon’s first line of defense — lessening wind exposure and rainfall for areas on its western side. Experts stress that although these mountains cannot fully stop a typhoon, they significantly reduce its impact, underscoring the importance of preserving them from deforestation and mining.
One of these natural defenders is the Caraballo Range in Nueva Vizcaya — the silent “Connector” linking the Sierra Madre and Cordillera. It stands as a powerful, quiet guardian that helps weaken storms like Typhoon Uwan while protecting the land and life across Luzon.
Salamat Panginoon, salamat Cordillera.
