SANGLEY POINT INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT UPDATE
Sangley Point International Airport (SPIA) project is gaining renewed momentum as President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directs concerned agencies to speed up its development and improve coordination with the provincial government and private sector partners. Under Administrative Order No. 44, a Joint Technical Working Group was created to address issues that could delay the project and streamline the processing of permits, clearances, licenses, and other requirements.
The JTWG will be co-chaired by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA), with members from key national agencies and the Cavite provincial government. The DOTr will lead policy and inter-agency coordination for the airportβs development and integration into the Greater Capital Region Airport System and national air transport network; the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) will oversee technical and regulatory requirements, including certifications and authorizations; and the PRA will oversee reclamation plans, technical standards, and compliance.
Meanwhile, Indian infrastructure giant GMR Group remains committed to joining the SPIA project. GMR has conducted several site visits in recent months and continues to work with the authorities and consortium. GMR is still awaiting the necessary clearances before finalizing its financing plans and is currently conducting traffic and financial studies for the project.
The $11-billion SPIA is envisioned to help ease congestion at Ninoy Aquino International Airport and provide the Philippines with another major international aviation gateway. The project is expected to create up to 15,000 jobs and generate an estimated $500 million in government revenue, while strengthening Caviteβs position as an emerging center for aviation, investment and economic activity in the Greater Manila Area.
