Since 2012, Iโve had the opportunity to celebrate Philippine Independence Day in different parts of the worldโfrom North America to Asia and the Middle East.
One thing that always stood out to me was how passionately overseas Filipinos celebrate it. Youโll see traditional Filipiniana attire, cultural performances, Filipino food festivals, parades, community gatherings, and an overwhelming sense of pride in being Filipino.
Ironically, many of these celebrations seem larger and more visible than what we typically experience back home in the Philippines.
It made me wonder: why do Filipinos abroad often celebrate Independence Day more enthusiastically than those living in the country?
Perhaps distance creates perspective.
When youโre far from home, you begin to appreciate the things you once took for grantedโthe language, the culture, the food, the people, and the freedoms that define us as a nation.
Independence Day is not just about remembering a historical event. It is an opportunity to reflect on what it means to be Filipino and how each generation contributes to the countryโs future.
For me, overseas celebrations have always been a reminder that patriotism is not measured by where you live, but by how you carry your identity, values, and love for the Philippines wherever you are in the world.
As we commemorate our nationโs independence, may we continue to celebrate not only our history, but also our shared responsibility in shaping a better future for the next generation of Filipinos.
