SM Malls in the Visayas Win Silver at Prestigious ICSC MAXI Awards

SM malls in the Visayas continue to earn global recognition for sustainability and community-driven innovation after receiving a Silver Award at the prestigious International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) MAXI Awards for the campaign “Art From All: Turning Community Action into Public Art.”

The award-winning sustainability initiative, launched at SM City Cebu and SM City Iloilo, transformed environmental responsibility into an engaging and immersive mall experience. The ICSC MAXI Awards is regarded as one of the world’s most respected honors recognizing excellence in marketing and innovation within the retail and shopping center industry.

Launched in May 2025, Art From All encouraged shoppers and local communities to donate plastic waste, which was later repurposed into large-scale eco-art installations displayed inside the malls. Through the initiative, a total of 31,634 plastic items were collected and transformed into meaningful public artworks, turning recycling into a highly visible and participatory activity that allowed communities to directly contribute to pieces carrying both cultural and environmental significance.

At SM City Cebu, collected plastic bottles were transformed into a massive whale shark or “butanding” eco-art installation titled “The Gentle Giant,” symbolizing Cebu’s rich marine biodiversity and coastal heritage. The artwork served as both a visual centerpiece and a reminder of the importance of protecting marine ecosystems through collective environmental action.

Meanwhile, at SM City Iloilo, donated plastic waste became part of the “Mangrove Memory Tree,” a life-sized eco-installation created by Ilongga artist Margaux Blas in partnership with Rezbin. Inspired by the vital role of mangroves in protecting coastal communities and marine ecosystems, the installation represented resilience, sustainability, and the collective power of community participation in environmental conservation.

Art From All was designed to make sustainability more engaging and accessible for everyday shoppers, transforming ordinary mall visits into opportunities to create positive environmental impact. Through the campaign, guests were encouraged to donate recyclable materials and witness these items reimagined into inspiring public art installations, proving that small community actions can come together to create meaningful experiences for present and future generations.

The recognition from the ICSC MAXI Awards reflects SM Supermalls’ continuing commitment to championing initiatives that create positive environmental and social impact across the communities it serves.

The Art From All campaign also reinforces the company’s broader sustainability efforts under its long-running green initiatives focused on waste management, plastic reduction, environmental education, responsible development, and community engagement.

Alongside Art From All, SM Supermalls also earned Silver recognition for “The SM Green Movement: Sustaining Communities Through Responsible Design,” further affirming the company’s vision of building greener and more resilient communities through sustainable mall operations and environmentally responsible practices while continuously delivering innovative and purposeful experiences.

Starting this May, SM Supermalls is further expanding Art From All across participating SM malls in the Visayas region. The featured eco-art installations will officially be unveiled in June 2026 in celebration of World Oceans Day.

Congratulations 👏

From Startup Hustle to Sustainable Growth: How Cebu Entrepreneurs Are Simplifying Business Operations

Every successful business begins with a hustle. What may start as a passion project whether an online store, a small café, or a food stall often grows into a larger enterprise filled with new opportunities and greater responsibilities.

As businesses expand, operations naturally become more demanding. Managing payroll, tracking payments, coordinating with suppliers, and monitoring cash flow can quickly become overwhelming, especially when processes remain manual.

To keep up with growth, many Cebu entrepreneurs are embracing digital solutions that make daily operations more efficient, accurate, and manageable.

Simplifying Everyday Business Tasks

According to Carlo Nazareno, Senior Vice President and Head of Cash Management Services at BDO, one of the biggest challenges entrepreneurs face is transforming a simple hustle into a scalable business.

“The first hurdle is turning that hustle into a scalable business. Once growth begins, many clients realize that managing cash flow becomes one of the most critical and time-consuming aspects of running operations,” he shared.

Today, digital cash management solutions allow business owners to automate essential functions such as payroll processing, supplier payments, and cash flow monitoring reducing the need for lengthy paperwork and repetitive manual tasks.

BDO’s Cash Management Services (CMS) for SMEs are designed to streamline financial operations through solutions that support payroll, check disbursements, and real-time monitoring. These tools help improve accuracy, reduce errors, and save valuable time on administrative work.

By automating routine processes, entrepreneurs can focus more on growing their businesses, improving products and services, and delivering better customer experiences.

Gaining Better Financial Visibility

One major advantage of digital cash management is having real-time access to financial information. Business owners can easily monitor how money moves within their operations, identify potential risks early, and uncover opportunities for expansion.

This level of visibility also enables entrepreneurs to make more proactive financial decisions instead of simply reacting to issues after they arise.

Preparing Businesses for Long-Term Success

“Business owners today are more dynamic and ambitious,” said Grace Caguioa, Senior Vice President and Unit Head for the BDO-CMS SME Segment. “They need digital banking solutions that can match their pace while giving them confidence that their finances are properly managed.”

Beyond technology, access to guidance and support remains essential. Financial consultations, lending options, and dependable banking services help entrepreneurs navigate challenges more confidently. Through BDO’s accessible branch network, business owners may also request specialized consultations with financial experts.

Entrepreneurs looking to simplify operations and improve efficiency can visit their nearest BDO Cebu branch to learn more about BDO’s CMS-SME packages and avail of exclusive freebies offered until May 31, 2026.
