Already for generations the Cebuanos have been making quality guitars. The guitar makers are considered to be among the world’s finest craftsmen. Maribago on Mactan island, is the center of Cebu’s guitar-making industry. Here you can watch the craftsmen at work.
Cebu City is also known for its call centers and many business establishment.
The city is also the Philippines’ main domestic shipping port and is home to about 80% of the country’s domestic shipping companies.

Feasibility study for Cebu-Cordova Bridge underway

CEBU CITY, Philippines - To ensure that all aspects are well taken cared and considered before the construction of the third bridge that will link mainland Cebu to Mactan Island will officially start, a feasibility study is underway for the project master plan.

A group from Parsons Brinckerhoff, the company conducting the study led by its president Dante Bautista briefed the Cebu City Government Department Heads and representatives from Municipality of Cordova and various sectors held at the Mayor's Conference Room in Cebu City Hall this Thursday afternoon July 9, 2015 about the project.

Bautista pointed out that they will be needing the necessary information and cooperation of all concerned offices especially from the city's departments and some affected villages for data gathering and preliminary engineering study.

In his presentation, Bautista bared that in the year 2020 there will be a large traffic congestion with an estimated of 20 Million passengers due the expansion of the Mactan Cebu International Airport, adding that there will be an estimated of 31,000 vehicles daily and that the two existing bridges would not suffice.

He disclosed that a new bridge that would cost around 18 billion pesos is a timely intervention and a noble project to answer the emerging problem.

"As of now we are in the process of data gathering to finalize our feasibility study which is expected to be completed before the end of September this year," he stressed, adding that the project would be holistic in approach to consider the mangroves that will be sacrificed and the residents and properties that will be affected, among others.

Asked if it will include bike lanes, the Parsons Brinckerhoff head answered that bike lanes is being considered to be incorporated in the project.

Meanwhile, the proposed third bridge will have a span of about seven kilometers which comprises the Main Bridge, Viaduct, Toll Plaza and Causeway. It will pave way to a network of roads that will have the alignment and connection on the side of Cebu City passing through ramps from part of South Road Properties and at the mouth of Guadalupe River.

The Main Bridge which will consider that it will not hamper the regular navigational route of various ships along Cebu Mactan Channel will connect Guadalupe River to the Shell Island in Cordova Town and a Viaduct that will bring the bridge to the level of the Causeway and road networks to the Mactan Island.

Furthermore, the proposed Cebu-Cordova Bridge which will be longer than the existing Marcelo Fernan Bridge and the old Mandaue-Mactan Bridge is not yet awarded to any company, the Parsons Brinckerhoff which is tasked to conduct the feasibility study will present their output before the Cebu City and Cordova town governments and other stakeholders of the project before it will jump-start. Budji Layug, Royal Pineda and Kenneth Cobonpue team up !
MANILA, Philippines - World-renowned Cebuano designer Kenneth Cobonpue will likely take charge of the design of the Mactan, Cebu International Airport expansion project.

Cobonpue told reporters recently that he had been approached by representatives of Filipino-owned Megawide Construction Corp. and Bangalore-based GMR Airports, which won on Friday the Mactan airport deal after posting the highest bid of P14.4 billion.

“We had been discussing,” Cobonpue said. “I told them to come back to me after tahe project has been awarded to them,” adding that he was aware of the delays in the bidding for the project.

Cobonpue had experienced bureaucratic red tape when he, along with designer Budji Layug and architect Royal Pineda, designed a rehabilitation plan for the more than 30-year-old Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 for free.

Their offer, however, was turned down by then Transportation Secretary Manuel Roxas II.

The three made the offer after the NAIA Terminal 1 topped the list of a travel website’s world’s lousiest airports to sleep in in 2012.
The airport also appeared in similar lists in 2013.

Last January, a US financial media company also ranked the NAIA as eighth among the 10 worst airports in the world, citing overcapacity issues in Terminals 1 and 3.

World-class Pinoy tricycle

Meanwhile, Cobonpue revealed that he is designing an electric tricycle to be produced here by Filipino-owned electric trike maker, EMotors, Inc.

“Their ultimate goal is to assemble their own Filipino tricycle,” he said of his collaboration with EMotors.

“This is my own brand of design. It’s nice,” he said, adding that the plan will be finished by next year.
