Sometimes we pray as though God is only working on one side of the story.

But what if while you are asking God for the right people, He is also preparing you to become the right person for someone else?

Maybe the connection you’re waiting for is waiting on your obedience.
Maybe the partnership you’re praying for is connected to someone else’s healing.
Maybe the answer to your prayer is also praying for wisdom, faith, and courage to meet you.

God has a beautiful way of connecting stories that were always meant to cross paths.

The Kingdom was never meant to be built alone.

Perhaps the miracle is not just that someone is coming.

Perhaps God is making both of you ready at the same time.

David Archuleta came out publicly on June 12, 2021, in an Instagram post during Pride month. He'd spent his whole life in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — a returned missionary, a clean-cut Mormon star since American Idol.

His mom, Lupe, didn't take it well at first. Her faith told her marriage was between a man and a woman, and she loved that faith. "I love you, but I love God more," she said. For a while, that's where they were stuck.

What changed wasn't David. It was her willingness to actually examine the thing she'd been defending. She read the church's history. She watched how the institution treated her son and other LGBTQ people. By late 2022 she'd written her bishop; by early 2023 she'd formally resigned. She didn't leave her belief in God. She left a building that wouldn't make room for her kid.

The line she landed on — "if you're going to hell, we're all going to hell with you" — became the seed of David's 2024 song "Hell Together," and it runs through the memoir he published this year, Devout. He's been candid that none of it was simple, and that plenty of families never get this ending.

This isn't a post about whether the church is right or wrong; people build whole lives of meaning inside it. It's about what one mother did when the choice came down to a doctrine or a person — and she chose the person, out loud, with a joke about hell, so her son would never wonder where she stood.
