Fire safety inside any residential unit starts with simple daily habits. These essential reminders help reduce risk and protect both lives and property:
1. Know your exit routes
Locate the nearest stairwell from your unit and walk the path at least once. In an emergency, visibility may be limited and alarms may be loud. Familiarity reduces panic and speeds up evacuation.
2. Never leave cooking unattended
Unattended cooking remains one of the most common causes of residential fires. Oil can overheat quickly and ignite within minutes. If you need to step away, turn off the stove first.
3. Unplug chargers and small appliances
Phone chargers, irons, kettles, heaters, and extension cords can overheat when left plugged in for long periods. Make it a habit to unplug devices after use, especially before leaving your unit or going to sleep.
4. Avoid overloading outlets
High wattage appliances draw strong electrical current. Plugging multiple appliances into one outlet increases the risk of overheating and electrical faults. Use properly rated outlets and distribute electrical load properly.
5. Have a simple fire plan
Keep a fire extinguisher in your kitchen and ensure everyone in your unit knows how to use it. Save emergency numbers on your phone. In case of fire, always use the stairs, never the elevator.
Fire safety is a shared responsibility between residents and building management. Small preventive actions today can prevent major damage tomorrow.
