CEBU HEIGHTS SUBDIVISION, THE PRE-WAR REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT IN CEBU!

In the January 12, 1934 issue 'Bag-ong Kusog', the popular daily newspaper in pre-war Cebu, was a full page advertisement of Cebu Heights Subdivision.

Cebu Heights cover the area from Fuente Osmeña Circle up to the Capitol compound and probably including the lots around it. The Capitol building was built in 1937.

Considered as the premium real estate development of the time, lots were sold at P1.80 per square meter. Today, these can easily be sold at 180k per sqm.

Roads were described as 20 meters wide, and lot cuts start at 300 to 600 sqm.

The payment term was also flexible, with minimal downpayment.

Cebu Heights Subdivision is in the headlines again, not because of a new phase opening after 90 years but for some controversies haunting the lot ownership of Osmeña Boulevard, where the equally controversial Cebu BRT is being built today.

The whole advertisement was written in pure, unadulterated Cebuano-Binisaya language.

The Bag-ong Kusog archives are painstakingly collected and stored by the Cebuano Studies of the University of San Carlos. It is now being catalouged and digitalized by Professor Max Limpag.

Transportation
Several buses and vans-for-hire travel to and from Santander at 20-minute intervals. The ride from Cebu South Bus Terminal in Cebu City is three to four hours.

A wharf in Barangay Talisay takes passengers via fastcrafts or barges to Tampi, San Jose, Negros Oriental. There are also two ports in Barangay Liloan, one for fastcrafts and another for pumpboats to Sibulan, Negros Oriental.[19]

Santander's popularity as a tourist destination has increased in the past few years, since it serves as the hub for some world-renowned dive spots like Apo Island, Balicasag, Pescador Island, Sumilon and Siquijor. This is also reflected in the growth of Santander in the tourism industry. Six years ago there were only two resorts, still open today. Today there are eleven.

The Cebu Electric Cooperative Inc. is supplying power to the households and commercial and public establishments in all 10 barangays of Santander.

Water, meanwhile, is supplied by the Municipal Water System which has greatly improved its services from what used to be rationing years ago to a 24-hour supply. There are also available purified water refilling stations in the town.

As for telecommunications, Globelines is available for landline services while Globe, Smart and Sun Cellular are servicing the mobile phone needs of residents and tourists. There are public phone booths in the Poblacion, and internet connection is available at various internet cafés.
