Sacred Heart Church: A Testament of Faith and Community
Nestled on D. Jakosalem Street, just across from the iconic City Clou by Golden Topper, stands the Sacred Heart Church—a beautiful symbol of devotion built through the generous contributions of Cebu's Chinese-Catholic community. Completed in 1960, this sacred space held its first Christmas Eve mass that same year, marking a milestone for the faithful.
Founded in 1952 as Sacred Heart Parish-Jesuit and originally dedicated to "Our Lady Queen of China," the parish was born from the heartfelt request of Chinese-Cebuano Catholics seeking spiritual guidance. Under the leadership of Fr. Miguel Pardinas, a Mexican priest who had been expelled from China, the community first gathered in the humble ground floor of the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral convent before finally finding their permanent home. Today, this church stands as a beacon of faith, heritage, and the enduring spirit of a community united in prayer.
Sacred Heart Church, D. Jakosalem St., Cebu City
Built from the contributions of its mostly Chinese churchgoers, the Sacred Heart Church was completed in time to celebrate its first mass on Christmas Eve of 1960.
The Sacred Heart Parish-Jesuit, founded in 1952, made up the church’s community. The parish was originally dedicated to the “Our Lady Queen of China” and was established upon the request of Chinese-Cebuano Catholics who asked for a Jesuit priest to minister to their pastoral needs.
It was Fr. Miguel Pardinas, a Mexican priest expelled from China, who organized the parish that once used the ground floor of the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral convent as a chapel for mass services.
