DAVAO CIVIC CENTER AT DAVAO GLOBAL TOWNSHIP BY CLI
While many community developments have become concrete jungles of residential and commercial towers with sparse token green spaces, DGT offers other components for the inhabitants’ well-being, such as a cultural and civic center, a one-hectare park, pockets of greenery, wide sidewalks, and bike lanes. Its sustainable master plan won the Best Township in Asia Award from the Property Guru Asia Property Awards 2021.
The 6,000-sqm center, blossoming at the heart of Davao Global Township’s vibrant community—DGT Civic Center hosts a collection of world-class facilities, showrooms, museum spaces, performance theaters, office spaces, and function rooms that will serve as a central palette for the artistic expression of the Davaoeño soul and spirit. This will be located just right across DGT City Center.
DE LA SALLE COLLEGE OF ST. BENILDE TO OPEN AT DAVAO GLOBAL TOWNSHIP (DGT)
De La Salle College of St. Benilde (DLS-CSB) to open a vertical campus in Davao Global Township in Matina, Davao City. DLSU College of Computer Studies Dean Rafael Cabredo said that modules in data science and information security will be one of the offerings, as well as engineering and business programs.
While the 6,000-sqm Davao Civic Center will be a destination for exhibits, film screenings, artistic endeavors, and special events; it will be also the initial venue for the DLS-CSB until it moves to its vertical campus, which will be designed by Architect Eduardo Calma. The architect designed the CSB School of Design and Arts in Manila at the turn of the millennium.
The proposed Davao Civic Center is an effort to develop a cultural hub with a powerful architectural expression motivated by the national flower of Davao, the Waling-Waling. Ed Calma’s design was inspired by the quality and experience of the space between overlapping petals and how these petals can be used as a language to express the spatial character of the various functions of the interior. In composing a design, he considers the site’s specifics, the client profile, and the available technology before incorporating his perspective. Every structure that Ed Calma designs is an exemplary work of art. According to him, for a project to be successful, both the client and the city must be receptive to novel ideas. Budgetary restrictions might exist, but they have little impact on him because he knows that even basic materials can be elevated. For the project to be deemed successful, all of these criteria must be met. However, Ed Calma can still produce something substantial even if one of these factors is weak. The most crucial factor, according to him, is “being relevant,” along with how the design will be viewed as a contribution to the architectural culture not only in the Philippines but around the world.

Species of orchid (scientific name: Vanda Sanderiana) considered as the “queen of Philippine flowers” is the inspiration for the Civic Center project as the organizing element. Steel framed structure unifying façade is composed of inflorescences giving rise to 5 distinct expressive roofs and 7 distinct facade arrangement of the flowers’ revelation, closely arranged, discernible curved and unequally notched edges.
The gaps are then filled with high-performance insulated structural glass wall with multi-colored dichroic film that evokes sense of movement and color, yet playful that transforms
