LOOK | ₱500 Million Convention Center Planned in Maa, Davao City, to Rival SMX

A local developer is moving forward with plans to build a ₱500 million convention center in Maa, Davao City. The project is expected to become one of the largest event venues in the area once completed. It is also positioned to serve as a strong competitor to the SMX Convention Center.

Christian Cambaya of the Davao City Investment Promotion Center (DCIPC) said the developer is now completing all the necessary permits. He shared this update during the Business Insights Forum at NCCC Victoria Plaza on Friday, Nov. 21. Cambaya noted that the city has seen continued interest from major investors.

The new convention center is planned to be larger than the current SMX Convention Center and will include several commercial spaces. This development comes at a time when SMX Convention Center and SM Lanang are also preparing for expansion. These projects reflect the growing demand for event facilities and commercial activity in Davao City.

Cambaya explained that the investor chose Davao City due to its stable peace and order situation. He also highlighted the availability of sufficient and affordable electricity as another major factor. These conditions continue to make the city an attractive destination for large-scale developments.

LOOK | 500 VinFast Green GSM E-Taxis Arrive at Davao Port

About 500 electric taxis from Green GSM, powered by Vietnam’s VinFast, have arrived at Davao Port. The large shipment marks another milestone in Davao City’s continuing drive toward modern and sustainable transportation. It also reflects the growing confidence of investors and transport innovators in the city’s readiness to adopt clean energy solutions.

While the official launch details have yet to be announced, the e-taxis are expected to feature long-range batteries, fast charging, and quiet, zero-emission performance. VinFast’s compact electric models, similar to the VF 5 and VF 6 series, can travel up to 380 kilometers per charge. These vehicles are designed to deliver efficiency, comfort, and reliability for both drivers and passengers.

This development follows the launch of Maligaya E-Taxis in September, which introduced Davaoeños to the city’s first electric taxi fleet. Although only a few units have been deployed so far, the project has drawn strong public interest and support. It has also laid the groundwork for a broader shift toward cleaner and more innovative transport systems in the city.

With the arrival of the Green GSM fleet, Davao continues to lead Mindanao in adopting sustainable and future-ready mobility. The growing presence of electric taxis could enhance passenger experience and help reduce traffic-related emissions. It also aligns with Davao City’s long-term goal of building a modern, inclusive, and eco-friendly public transport network that reflects its vision as the Crown Jewel of Mindanao.

LOOK | THE NEW ‘DAVAO MUSEUM: ATENEO DE DAVAO HERITAGE CENTER’

Davao City will soon welcome another museum to enrich its cultural and historical landscape. On August 28, 2025, Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) officially became the new steward of the Davao Museum Collection, previously managed by the Zonta Club of Davao. A symbolic turnover followed, marked by the handover of a betel quid box representing bonds and agreements.

The collection will now be housed at Rodriguez Hall, CCFC Building, AdDU Jacinto Campus. Architect Jim R. Palma unveiled the Mindanawon-inspired design for the new Davao Museum–Ateneo de Davao Heritage Center, featuring an articulated façade that serves as a symbol of memory and place. Defined by glass framed in metal, the façade balances transparency and translucency to softly illuminate the building. Perforated metal panels, inspired by Davao’s ancestral houses, converge at a prominent corner into a large-scale cut-out of the “Tree of Life”—an okir motif symbolizing growth, eternity, and interconnectedness.

The first-floor will showcase the Davao Museum galleries and support spaces, curating stories of the city and its cultural heritage. Meanwhile, the second-floor will house the Ateneo de Davao Heritage Center, highlighting the university’s legacy and mission in Mindanao. The museum’s branding reinforces this vision through an okir-inspired typeface—rooted in Mindanao’s cultural language yet projecting a contemporary character. Collectively, these elements mark another milestone in strengthening Davao City’s role as a hub of history, art, and culture in Mindanao.

LOOK | AUGUST 2025 CONSTRUCTION UPDATE OF 803-M STA. ANA WHARF BRIDGE, DAVAO CITY COASTAL ROAD

The 803-meter Sta. Ana Wharf Bridge—an integral component of Segment D of the Davao City Coastal Road—continues to progress steadily toward completion. As of August 2025, Approach B is now being land-filled and constructed, marking a crucial step in connecting the bridge seamlessly to the main carriageway. Meanwhile, the northbound approach is already being leveled and paved.

Once the entire 17.8-kilometer Davao City Coastal Road is completed, it will ease traffic congestion in the city center while providing motorists and commuters with a scenic route along Davao’s bustling growth corridor.

Set against the backdrop of the Davao Park District skyline, the bridge highlights both functionality and aesthetics. The Davao Park District, a modern township by Megaworld Corporation, features office towers, themed condominiums, and green spaces—making the bridge not just an infrastructure milestone but also a complement to Davao’s evolving urban landscape.

LOOK | CHANGI AIRPORT GROUP JOINS PPP BIDDING FOR DAVAO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (DIA)

World-class operator Changi Airport Group of Singapore, consistently ranked among the best airports in the world, has officially joined the race to manage and operate the Davao International Airport under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) scheme.

According to Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, three conglomerates have now submitted their proposals for DIA:
• Filinvest Group
• Gokongwei Group
• Changi Airport Group (Singapore)

Dizon emphasized that unlike NAIA, Clark, and Mactan airports—already run by private operators—Davao remains the only major international gateway still under government management. He expressed confidence that the proposals could be approved this year, marking a major step toward elevating DIA’s facilities and services to global standards.

The entry of Changi Airport Group signals a strong vote of confidence in Davao’s growth as a premier international hub, boosting investor sentiment and positioning the city as a true gateway to Mindanao.

LOOK | DAVAO RIVER (BUCANA) BRIDGE NEARS COMPLETION — 94% FINISHED

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has reported that the 1,340-meter Bucana Bridge Project, spanning the Davao River, is now 94% complete and targeted to open by the last quarter of 2025. The entire superstructure has already been completed, with only minor works remaining such as traffic barriers, pedestrian railings, and final painting of its pylons, each standing about 64 feet high.

Simultaneous works on the approach roads continue, covering embankment soil compaction, subbase course preparation, drainage system installation, guardrail placement, and concrete fence construction. Preparations are also underway for waterproofing and asphalt overlay of the bridge deck.

Construction began in November 2023, and the project now stands as both a vital infrastructure asset for Davao City and a symbol of bilateral cooperation, international partnership, and high-quality engineering. Once operational, the four-lane, six-span extradosed bridge will provide a faster, safer, and more efficient route between Barangays 76-A Bucana and Matina Aplaya.
