MAKRO RETURNS TO CAVITE
Wholesale giant Makro is set to return to Cavite with a planned store in Evo City, nearly two decades after its Philippine operations were absorbed into the SM retail network. Makro entered the Philippines in 1996, and its former Imus branch along Aguinaldo Highway was among the stores converted into SM Hypermarkets in 2009 following SM Group’s acquisition.
The brand is now being revived through a joint venture between Ayala Corporation and Thai-listed CP Axtra, operator of the Makro and Lotus’s wholesale and retail brands. In 2025, the two companies agreed to relaunch Makro in the Philippines, bringing back its warehouse-style wholesale concept through physical stores and online channels serving both households and businesses.
As part of the revival, Ayala Land Inc. has signed long-term lease agreements with Makro Philippines for stores in four Ayala mixed-use estates in Luzon: Cloverleaf in Quezon City, Broadfield in Biñan, Laguna, Arca South in Taguig, and Evo City in Kawit, Cavite. The planned Evo City store will mark Makro’s return to Cavite nearly two decades after its former branch was converted, bringing the familiar wholesale format back to the province as part of Evo City’s expanding commercial landscape.
