A DENR-EMB Region 6 Notice of Public Scoping for an โAtria Mall Projectโ by Ayala Land, Inc. is making the rounds on social media and naturally, Ilonggos are losing it.
To be fair, the speculation makes sense. While Iloilo already has Shops at Atria within Atria Park District, itโs an open-air strip mall not the sprawling, air-conditioned behemoth Ilonggos have been quietly (and sometimes loudly) waiting for.
The type of full-scale Ayala Mall youโd find in Cebu, Bacolod, or Metro Manila? That still doesnโt exist here.
So when a government document surfaces with โAtria Mall Projectโ and โAyala Landโ in the same sentence, you canโt blame people for getting their hopes up.
Hereโs the thing, though: this could very well be referring to Atria Gardens, the lifestyle garden district that Ayala Land announced in November 2023, which will feature shopping and dining components in a park setting โ not necessarily a massive enclosed mall.
Atria Gardens is envisioned as a commercial and lifestyle hub, with the new Technohub office buildings as its anchors, alongside a high street experience celebrating local and global retail concepts.
So: a proper Ayala Mall with multiple floors, a food court, and central aircon? Still not confirmed.
What is clear is that Ayala Landโs attention in the Visayas right now is heavily on Cebu โ the company has committed P12.7 billion to redevelop three of its Cebu properties, with Ayala Malls COO Paul Birkett calling it a reflection of the brandโs strong confidence in the regionโs growth. Iloilo, meanwhile, continues to wait its turn.
With SM, Megaworldโs Festive Walk, and Robinsons all already planting their flags here, the cityโs mall landscape is far from barren. But thereโs something about an Ayala Mall โ the brand, the curation, the vibe โ that Ilonggos have been hoping for.
For now, weโll just have to wait and see.
