MAYORS FOR GOOD GOVERNANCE DEMAND FULL TRANSPARENCY, ACCOUNTABILITY, AND JUSTICE ON FLOOD CONTROL PROJECTS
Mayors for Good Governance called for full transparency and accountability in the investigation of alleged massive corruption in flood control and other infrastructure projects.
The statement—led by Baguio City Mayor Benjie Magalong, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, and Isabela City Mayor Sitti Hataman—demanded that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and concerned national agencies immediately release all project documents, including programs of work, feasibility studies, and, most importantly, the names of contractors and politicians behind the multi-billion peso projects.
"Transparency is no longer optional, but a duty we owe to every Filipino," the group said.
The mayors expressed support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive during his fourth State of the Nation Address on July 28 to investigate ₱350 billion worth of flood control projects. They stressed that corruption in these projects has become "alarming, pervasive, and systematic" over the years.
The coalition emphasized that those proven guilty must not only be removed from office but also prosecuted and jailed.
"Corruption must end now. The Filipino people deserve a government that protects and serves them, not one that endangers their lives and robs them of their future," the mayors declared.
