𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗿. 𝗗𝗠 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗻𝗷𝗶

Looking back on his life and career, Engr. David M. “DM” Consunji often spoke about the people who helped him learn and grow as a builder along the way.

He was grateful for the teachers and professors who shaped his education and the architects and fellow engineers who influenced him throughout his career.

But some of the lessons he carried with him came from beyond the classroom and the drawing board. One of the people he remembered years later in his memoir was a foreman named Cortez.

As a young builder learning the ropes of construction in the 1950s, DM would often visit the project sites of Antolin M. Oreta Sr., whose firm was among the country's leading construction companies at the time. There, he spent hours observing and talking to Oreta's top foreman, Cortez.

DM shared the story in his memoir A Passion to Build.

“When I was a very young builder learning the ropes of construction in the 1950s, I would often visit the project sites of Antolin Oreta's construction firm and spend many hours observing and talking to his best foreman, Cortez. I would tell him that I was new in construction and would ask questions. He would generously answer my questions and teach me things I never learned in school. Later I would tell the old man Oreta about this and he was alarmed upon learning that I had often talked to his best foreman. He probably thought Cortez had given away his trade secrets.”

The lessons stayed with him.

Throughout his career, DM developed a deep respect for foremen and skilled craftsmen. In A Passion to Build, he wrote:

“I always had great respect for good foremen because many of them are very good builders, perhaps ‘unschooled’ by academic standards, but very knowledgeable and valuable just the same. I myself benefited greatly from the expertise of a great foreman.”

Perhaps that is why he remembered Cortez so fondly, even decades later.

This World Teachers' Day, we celebrate not only the educators who guided us in school, but also the mentors we meet throughout life, the people who generously share their knowledge, answer our questions, and help us grow.

For DM, one of those people was Cortez. Years later, as he built DM Consunji, Inc. (DMCI) into one of the country's leading construction and engineering companies and became known as the "Grandfather of the Philippine Construction Industry," he never forgot the foreman who generously shared his knowledge with a young builder eager to learn.
