“Eh ano ngayon kung UP ka?”
When Jessica Soho asked this at UP Diliman’s 114th General Commencement Exercises, it wasn’t to tear anyone down—it was a reality check. A reminder that outside the campus gates, work becomes the equalizer. Your diploma may open doors, but it’s your character, discipline, and service that will keep you standing.
She shared how early in her career, she was told to carry equipment, learn the ropes, and do the hard work—because in the field, nobody asks where you graduated. They ask: Can you deliver? Can you learn? Can you show up?
And then came the heart of the message: being UP is a blessing, yes—but it’s also a responsibility. Not a title to flex, but a calling to be worthy of: Iskolar ng Bayan. UP is not an “ivory tower.” It’s meant to stay connected to the community—especially to the people who need solutions, truth, and hope the most.
She challenged the graduates to step out of their comfort zones, reach beyond their circles, and use their voices for something bigger than themselves—because with the right voice and courage, baka may pag-asa, baka kayo ang matagal nang hinihintay na pagbabago.
So if someone asks you one day: “Eh ano ngayon kung UP ka?”
Don’t take it as shade. Take it as a reminder:
Be humble.
Be excellent.
Serve people—especially when nobody is watching.
