A P-trap is a plumbing fixture found beneath sinks, showers, and other drains. It has a distinct U- or P-shaped bend in the pipe, designed to trap water and prevent sewer gases from rising into your home.
How It Works:
1. Water Trap – The curved shape of the P-trap holds a small amount of water after each use. This water acts as a barrier against sewer gases.
2. Prevents Odors – Without a P-trap, unpleasant and potentially harmful gases (like methane and hydrogen sulfide) from the sewer or septic system could enter your living space.
3. Catches Debris – The trap also helps catch debris, such as hair, food particles, or grease, preventing clogs further down the plumbing system.
4. Allows Easy Cleaning – If a clog occurs, the P-trap can be removed and cleaned without having to snake the entire drain system.
Where It’s Used:
• Kitchen Sinks – Helps trap food particles and grease.
• Bathroom Sinks – Catches hair, soap scum, and small objects (like rings).
• Showers & Bathtubs – Prevents sewer gases and catches hair.
• Washing Machines – Installed in laundry drains to prevent odors.
P-traps are required by plumbing codes and are an essential part of any drainage system.
