Other presidents were called “Your Excellency.” Others had to be addressed with formalities, with reverence born out of protocol rather than love. But he was different.
He was Tatay.
Not “Sir.” Not “Mr. President.”
Not a distant figure ruling from a palace.
He was Tatay Digong - the only leader in modern Philippine history to be called father by his people, not out of obligation, but out of genuine affection and respect.
Because he was not just a commander-in-chief, not just a politician. He was the leader who felt like home, the one who spoke the language of the streets, who cursed when people cursed, who laughed when they laughed, who mourned when they mourned.
They mocked him for his crassness. They ridiculed his tough talk. But to the Filipino people, it was never about polish - it was about authenticity.
He was the president who held grieving mothers after their children were lost to drug violence.
He was the president who walked among the people, unguarded, unpretentious, unafraid.
He was the president who spoke not like a ruler, but like a father fiercely protecting his family.
And so, the nation called him Tatay.
Because to millions of Filipinos, he was not just a politician - he was their defender, their guardian, their protector.
Today, they try to strip him of his title. They try to humiliate him, imprison him, erase his legacy.
But what they do not understand is this:
A title can be taken.
A name can be slandered.
But the love of a nation? The respect of the people?
That is unshakable.
And no court, no foreign entity, no political maneuvering can take that away.
He was, is, and will always be Tatay Digong.
And the love of the Filipino people will forever prove it.
