The Battle of Breakneck Ridge was the bloodiest single battle of the Liberation of the Philippines: Excerpt from the "The Saga of Leyte Gulf" (Amazon.com, Kindle Direct Publishing)..--"
It was raining very hard and at the foot of the ridge, Sherman Tanks stuck in the mud have started pulverizing the top of the ridge. Mortar shells began to rain on the positions of the Japanese defenders who were hiding in their trenches and spider-holes."
"The first few days of the battle saw the Japanese inflicting heavy casualties to the attacking American forces because they had 30 caliber machinegun nests mounted on top of the ridge. Those were very efficient and lethal weapons. Wave after wave of assaults by the US X and XX Marine forces were repulsed by heavy fire from the top resulting in whole squads being wiped out. The battle was being waged inch-by-inch and foot-by-foot from the Limon position of the Americans to the top of the Breakneck Ridge. After more than a week of relentless pounding on the Japanese, the Americans were still 1,000 yards from the Japanese position, from their starting point at 1,500 yards. With bayonets fixed, both protagonists prepared for a hand-to-hand combat.
The Americans struck the Japanese defenders with everything they had – tanks, flamethrowers, mortars, Thompson submachine guns (TSMGs), Browning Automatic Rifles (BAR) and 105 mm artillery howitzers. But the Japanese still tenaciously held their positions on top of the ridge. Then the weather cleared and the bombers from the carriers and nearby Tacloban airfield were called in. It took several bomb-runs and strafing before the Japanese machine gun nests were silenced. This was the signal for the attacking troops to storm the top. With bayonets fixed, fierce-hand-to hand combat ensued. The Americans simply overwhelmed the outnumbered and outgunned troops of Captain Yamaguchi."
