TAX CONVICTION OF MARCOS JR.
Social media is abuzz again with another controversy involving presidential aspirant Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., this time over his failure to file income tax returns and pay tax deficiencies for several years.
While his camp called it “propaganda,” the recently filed petition listed several legal bases to seek the disqualification of the late dictator’s son and namesake from running for president.
Marcos Jr., the petition argued, should not be allowed to seek the highest public office of the land because “he is, plainly, a convicted” person.
The conviction, according to the petition, became final in 2001, which is among the grounds for disqualification of a candidate—whether for president or a lower position—in the Omnibus Election Code.
