REPORT: SM eyes $200-M Landers deal in push into premium retail
The Sy family’s SM group is eyeing a nearly $200-million investment in the Yu family’s Landers Superstore as it pushes deeper into premium retail, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported.
The deal could give the country’s biggest retailer a foothold in membership shopping, a segment long dominated by Lucio Co’s S&R.
SM is in talks to buy private equity firm CVC Capital Partners’ interest in Landers, estimated at a 49-percent economic stake, according to the report published in the Inquirer’s Biz Buzz column.
Editor’s note: After the original story was published, SM Investments Corp. denied that it was in discussions or negotiations with Landers or its shareholders.
