The West Valley Fault is capable of generating a magnitude 7.2 earthquake, often referred to as the โBig One.โ This has raised concerns in Metro Manila, especially in central business districts like Makati, BGC, and Ortigas where many high-rise condos and corporate offices are located. While the risk is real, it is just as important to understand that these areas are also some of the most prepared and structurally resilient in the country.
Modern developments in Ortigas, Makati, and BGC follow strict National Building Code standards and international engineering practices. Many buildings use deep foundation systems, base isolation technology, and undergo thorough structural assessments before being turned over to the public. Major developers in Ortigas Center design their towers to meet seismic requirements and coordinate with city offices for emergency readiness and annual safety inspections.
Local governments in these CBDs regularly conduct earthquake drills and require business establishments and condos to have evacuation plans and emergency equipment. Ortigas, for example, has multiple access roads, wide open spaces such as parks and driveways, and well-coordinated property management groups that ensure faster disaster response. This makes living and working in these areas safer compared to older, unregulated structures outside the CBDs.
Historically, even after earthquakes in Luzon and Visayas, demand for condos and offices in well-built CBDs remained strong. Buyers and tenants prefer properties with solid engineering, 24/7 security, and professional building management rather than homes with no structural certification.
The goal is not to ignore the possibility of the โBig Oneโ but to face it with preparedness. Choosing a condo or office in Ortigas, Makati, or BGC means choosing a community that invests in safety, infrastructure, and disaster planning. Combine this with personal readiness like emergency kits and knowledge of โdrop, cover, and hold,โ and the risk becomes manageable.
The โBig Oneโ should not be a reason to avoid investing or living in CBDs. It should be a reason to choose wisely. Preparedness, reliable engineering, and organized communities are what truly protect people โ not fear.
