🇵🇭| MANILA AMONG MOST AFFORDABLE CITIES FOR THE RICH IN 2025

Manila has landed in the global spotlight as one of the most affordable cities for the world’s wealthy, ranking 23rd out of 25 major cities in the Julius Baer Lifestyle Index for 2025. The annual report analyzes the cost of 11 luxury goods and nine premium services typically consumed by high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs), including watches, jewelry, handbags, cars, fine dining, healthcare, and education.

Despite rising global prices, Manila remains a relatively cost-effective destination for luxury living. Interestingly, champagne and ladies’ handbags were the second and third most expensive items in Manila out of the 25 cities surveyed—proving that while Manila is generally affordable for the rich, certain high-end items still carry premium price tags.

Regionally, the report noted a significant 18.2% rise in business class airfare, driven by the evolving habits of upscale leisure travelers who prioritize comfort, in-flight experiences, and luxury amenities. This shift is part of what the index calls “revenge spending,” as affluent individuals lean into experiential luxury post-pandemic.

The index also highlights a growing focus on longevity and wellness. In the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, 100% of surveyed HNWIs reported making lifestyle changes aimed at increasing their lifespan—through exercise, diet, and even advanced methods like gene therapy and cryogenic chambers.

In the last year, the most common luxury expenditures among affluent APAC residents included fine dining (65%), smartphones (65%), hotels (64%), healthcare (63%), and women’s luxury fashion (55%). These spending habits reflect a deepening desire among the wealthy to invest in both personal experiences and well-being.

Conducted between November 2024 and March 2025, the Julius Baer Lifestyle Index gathered price data from brand-owned boutiques, official websites, and licensed vendors across 25 global cities. The findings are based on surveys with 360 HNWIs, each possessing bankable household assets of at least $1 million.

Manila’s position in the index adds another dimension to its evolving identity: not just a cultural and commercial hub, but also an attractive city for the global elite seeking value in their luxury lifestyles.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the Philippines rose 7.1% year-on-year in April 2025, reaching $610 million, mainly driven by increased investments from Japan and strong inflows into the manufacturing sector. This rebound followed a decline in March and was largely supported by a rise in debt instrument investments. However, equity capital (excluding reinvestments) fell sharply by 94.1%.

Japan was the top source of equity, with the manufacturing sector receiving nearly half of the total investments. Analysts noted growing investor interest in the Philippines as a manufacturing hub amid global supply chain shifts, but cautioned that newly raised U.S. tariffs on Philippine exports could dampen future FDI.

From January to April, overall FDI inflows declined 33.4% year-on-year to $2.37 billion, with equity investments and debt instruments both down. Despite the drop, reinvested earnings rose slightly. Experts emphasized the need for proactive government measures to sustain investor interest.
