In one of his last major essays before his death, Jose Maria Sison laid bare the Communist Party of the Philippinesโ political playbook, one that turns democracy itself into a weapon.

Certainly not rare but a candid exposition of the CPPโs dual political strategy: the simultaneous pursuit of armed struggle and electoral participation through its legal โpatriotic and democraticโ organizations. Read carefully, Sisonโs own words reveal how the Party sustains this two-pronged approach, and how it protects the tactic by weaponizing the narrative of โred-tagging.โ
His own words, not conjecture or hearsay, establish that groups such as the Makabayan Bloc and Kabataan Partylist participate in the elections as part of the broader revolutionary framework, not as independent reformist entities.
Sison distinguishes between the revolutionary underground movement led by the CPP-NPA and the legal patriotic and democratic forces that operate openly within the parameters of the 1987 Constitution. He openly admits that these โlegal forcesโ engage in โelectoral and political exercises of the ruling systemโ to โadvance the just cause of full national independence, democracy, and social justice.โ
This is not a denial of the Partyโs revolutionary objectives, it is, in fact, a tactical adaptation. Sison frames it as a necessary maneuver within a semi-colonial and semi-feudal system where elections remain a powerful medium to reach and mobilize the masses.
