The proposed cable car project marks a potential first for Philippine public transport, reviving an idea long discussed but never realized.
Taytay Antipolo Cable Car Targets 2028 Launch As PH Eyes First Aerial Transit
The Department of Transportation plans to roll out the country’s first cable-car system by 2028, according to Transportation Undersecretary Timothy John Batan. The project is expected to link the future MRT-4 station in Taytay to Antipolo City in Rizal. A feasibility study is set to begin in mid-2025 to determine costs and passenger capacity, with bidding eyed from late 2025 to early 2026. “If we award in 2026, then potentially it may be possible in 2028,” Batan said.
The cable car is intended to complement the proposed 12.7-kilometer MRT-4 line running from EDSA-Ortigas to Taytay, particularly serving the densely populated Antipolo area with high economic activity. Similar cable car proposals were floated during the Duterte administration for Metro Manila, Boracay, and Baguio, backed by a ₱27-million French-funded feasibility study, but those plans were never implemented.
