Set your alarm - August 12 brings a six-planet alignment before sunrise, a solar eclipse in the afternoon, and the peak of the Perseid meteor shower after dark - a new moon keeps the sky perfectly dark - NASA says this combination is extremely rare!!!
It starts in the pre-dawn hours, when six planets will be stretched across the sky in a wide sweep from east to west. Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, and Saturn will be visible to the naked eye, while Uranus will require binoculars and Neptune a telescope. The best time to look is in the hour before sunrise, when the planets are highest and the sky has not yet brightened.
Then comes the afternoon solar eclipse, sweeping across Greenland, Iceland, Arctic Russia, northern Spain, and a small corner of Portugal, marking the first total solar eclipse visible from western and central Europe since 1999. Observers in broader parts of Europe, Canada, the northern United States, and northwestern Africa will see a partial eclipse. If any part of the sun is visible, certified eclipse glasses or a safe solar viewer are essential.
The new moon also arrives on August 12, the fourth major event of the day and arguably the most important for skywatchers. It means the night sky will be as dark as it gets, with zero moonlight competing with the stars, creating ideal conditions for the evening's main event.
After dark, the Perseid meteor shower peaks on the night of August 12 into the early morning of August 13, capable of producing up to 100 meteors per hour under those perfectly dark new moon skies. For the best view, move away from city lights, let your eyes adjust for at least 20 minutes, and simply watch from late evening into the early hours of August 13. No equipment required.
While individual occurrences of these events are common throughout any given year, their simultaneous arrival on a single calendar date is highly unusual.
Set an alarm for before sunrise. Find eclipse glasses if you are in a viewing region for the afternoon. Step outside at the new moon. Get somewhere dark after nightfall.
