UAE residents have been warned of fraudulent activities committed by scammers, time and again.

In this common scam that has been going around, a scammer sends the victim a 'legal notice' from the 'Central Bank of the UAE' on WhatsApp.

However, upon a closer look, it is relatively easy to tell that the document is a fake. The document, titled 'legal notifications' has some obvious spelling errors.

The document, seen below, has several grammatical errors as well and does not follow the format of one. It says: "Sorry, dear customer your bank account (ATM, debit, credit cards) will be freeze due to some security reasons, (and verify your all correct details) otherwise you account will be suspended permanent."

It also provides a contact number and features a signature and stamp (with another spelling error).

Scams like these take place fairly often, where fraudsters impersonate UAE authorities and attempt to retrieve victims' bank details.

Recently, the Ras Al Khaimah Police managed to track down a gang of fraudsters believed to be stealing huge sums of money from residents' bank accounts.

Seven Asians from inside and outside the country were arrested in connection with the scam, police said on Thursday.

The gang would pose as bank representatives and contact residents via phone calls or fake WhatsApp messages, the police said, explaining the modus operandi. Then, they would people into revealing bank details by saying their accounts would be blocked if the data was not provided. Victims who fall victim to this scheme would end up giving scammers access to their bank accounts, and the next thing they know, their deposits are wiped out.

Staying safe
Banks do not ask customers to disclose personal information via SMS, WhatsApp, e-mails or phone calls under the pretext of updating accounts, authorities have said.

In case you encounter such suspicious activities, report them to the authorities immediately.

LAHORE – A fake notification of the Finance Division is circulating on social media, claiming that the government has decided to discontinue to Rs5,000 currency note in Pakistan from September 30, 2023.

Unmute
Remaining Time -9:56

The notification is being widely shared by social media users without verification, sparking panic among masses, who are struggling to verify it.

The fake notification states, “In pursuance of sub-section (2) of Section 323 of Pakistan Penal Code (Act XLV of 1860), the Federal Government is pleased to announce a significant policy change aimed at strengthening the financial system and curbing illicit financial activities. With effect from September 30, 2023, the use, possession, and circulation of Rs 5000 currency notes will be banned throughout the country”.

“Here are key points to note regarding this policy change:

Effective Date: The ban on Rs 5000 currency notes will take effect on September 30, 2023. From this date onwards, these notes will no longer be legal tender.

Exchange and Deposit: Citizens and financial institutions are encouraged to exchange or deposit their Rs S000 notes at authorized banks and financial institutions until the specified deadline. After September 30, 2023, the notes will only be accepted at designated government offices and central banks.

Public Awareness: The government will launch an awareness campaign to educate citizens about the upcoming change and provide guidance on the proper procedures for exchanging or depositing Rs5000 notes,” it adds.

It carries the alleged signature of Muhammad Shahid Ahmed Ch, Deputy Secretary R-III.

An expert on economic affairs told DailyPakistan that there was no any Deputy Secretary R-III in Internal Finance Wing.

The font size and style are also different than the official notification issued by the government.

Furthermore, there is no any official word from the Ministry of Finance and State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on this matter.

This means, the Rs5,000 currency note -- that was first introduced in Pakistan on May 27, 2006 -- will remain in circulation in the country.

Meanwhile, Caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi confirmed it as fake.

About 565 companies were found to have hired a total of 824 UAE nationals in bogus Emiratisation jobs since mid-last year, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has announced. The Ministry said that “the necessary legal and administrative action against them” has been initiated.

“Fake Emiratisation is a clear violation of Emiratisation-related decisions and the regulations of the Nafis programme,” MoHRE said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Legal and administrative procedures have been taken against violating establishments, including degrading their categorization within MoHRE’s systems, imposing fines ranging from Dh20,000 to Dh100,000, and potential referral to the Public Prosecution, based on the level of the violation.”

ISLAMABAD – The National Electric and Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) is likely to increase the per unit electricity price in Pakistan, starting from September 1, amid ongoing protests against exorbitant electricity bills.

Protests against the higher electricity bills have entered the sixth day as people have taken to streets in Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Karachi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Hyderabad, and other cities.

The angry protesters torched the electricity prices amid public announcements of not paying the bills until the additional taxes and recent hike in power tariff are withdrawn.

Amid the protests, the Nepra will hear an application filed by the Central Power Purchasing Authority (CPPA) seeking an increase of Rs2.07 per unit in electricity price on the account of fuel cost adjustment.

If the prices are jacked up, the additional amount will be recovered from consumers in bills for the month of September 2023.

Citizens from 115 other countries will still require pre-approved visas before arriving in the UAE

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) grants visa-free travel for over 80 countries, according to a report by Al Khaleej.

Citizens from 115 other countries will still require pre-approved visas before arriving in the UAE.

The ministry has also urged those seeking specific visa information to visit the official ministry website, adding that they must remain informed about entry requirements.

The list of these nations and details concerning visa exemptions for travellers holding regular passports can be found on the ministry’s dedicated website.

The UAE Digital Government has also said that citizens from GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries can enter the UAE without a visa or sponsor.

They only need to present a passport issued by a GCC nation or their ID card upon arrival at UAE entry ports.

Depending on their country of origin, international travellers may receive entry visas valid for either 30 days, with a grace period of 10 additional days, or 90 days.

In addition, Indian citizens with ordinary passports, meeting specific criteria such as holding a US visit visa or resident card, or a resident visa from the UK and EU countries, can obtain a 14-day visa on arrival, which can be extended for another 14 days if necessary.

For those not falling within the visa exemption or visa-on-arrival categories, an entry permit is mandatory.

This permit, dependent on the purpose of the visit, must be acquired from the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) before arriving in the UAE.

Moreover, the UAE passport currently holds the top position on the Passport Index website, making it the world’s most powerful passport.

UAE passport holders have access to 180 countries, with 127 not requiring a visa in advance, and 53 offering electronic visas or visas upon airport arrival.

The administration of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has doubled down against its employees, who are currently in the midst of a strike. The airline has completed legal consultations to move forward and take action against its employees.

The airline will claim the employees have violated the Pakistan Essential Services (Maintenance) Act, 1952, which was imposed in May. When applied, the act makes any negligence in the line of duty a crime. In addition, the act prevents employees from gathering in crowds, staging protests or sit-ins.
