The electric log can locate and determine the exact thickness and position of water bearing formations at a specific site.

This makes electric logging equipment a valuable tool to assist well drillers in finding water bearing formations.

This equipment measures and records the changes between an electrode placed in the test hole and a second electrode at the surface, usually in the mud pit.

The function of the electric logger is to provide a graphic representation of the electrical properties of the various formations encountered in a test hole.

The SP scale indicates the type of water in the formation relative to the drilling fluid.

The R scale indicates the relative porosity of the formation. Generally, the coarser the formation, the greater the deflection to the right. For instance, a stone will usually show up as a deflection that goes off the scale, clay and shale show little or no deflection, and other formations may contain sand and silt which show up on the scale as back and forth variance.

As rule of thumb, the best formations in which to develop a domestic water well have a slight variance in the SP scale that corresponds to a consistent deflection to the right on the R scale.

Generally, the larger the depth of the formation, the greater the potential for increased well yield.
